The Great Sphinx of Giza
It is believed the great sphinx by most Egyptologists to represent the likeness of King Khafre (also known by the Hellenised version of his name, Chephren) who is often credited as well as manufacturer. This would put the period of construction somewhere between 2520 BC and 2494 BC. Because obviously limited to giving from Khafre is ambiguous and circumstantial, the idea of who built the Sphinx, and when, continues to be the topic of discussion. As Dr. Selim Hassan stated in his report on the excavation of the closing years of sphinx 40:
These Egyptologists who support this view believe that the context of the Sphinx is part of the largest funerary complex credited to Khafre which includes temples and sphinxes valley, a roadway, and the 2nd pyramid. The two temples show the same architectural style using stones weighing up to 200 tons. It is common for temples, with the Sphinx, were all part of the same career and construction.
Circumstantial evidence used to support the theory of Khafre includes a diorite statue of King that was discovered buried upside-down with other debris in the temple nearby valley. Because of its relative proximity to the sphinx, this report is that of Khafre Egyptologists associated more with the sphinx
In addition, Stela dreamer built by Pharaoh Thutmose IV in the new realm by Egyptologists is supposed to involve the Sphinx to King Khafre. Once discovered, however, the lines of text were incomplete, only referring to a to, of Khaf and not the full to Khafre. The syllable Ra absent were later added to complete the translation by Thomas Young, on the assumption that the text was reported Khafre. Young ’s interpretation was based on an earlier facsimile in which the translation reads as follows:
